Today marks the 9th anniversary of Aaliyah’s death. I still remember it. I was laying in bed in Indianapolis watching tv when an alert came over my Timeport (remember those?!) that there’d been a plane crash in the Bahamas and Aaliyah, along with 8 others, had died.
I immediately thought it was a hoax…because that couldn’t be right!….so I turned to CNN and there it was, splashed on the screen, that Aaliyah had in fact passed away. I felt heartbroken. I’d never met her, never seen her live or anything, but I’d always loved her as artist and thought that she was exemplary as a young woman. I was one who definitely rocked the long wrap hair style with the exaggerated bang, the baggy pants with the cropped tops, and embraced the sexy tomboy thing. I felt like she was a famous version of how I was! Also, she was just hitting her stride and I was sure she was about to do HUGE things in both the music and film world. How could her life be cut short?! I cried as if she was one of my friends. I cried for her family. I cried for the loss the entertainment community was sure to experience. Ahhhh….it was not a good day.
I still wonder what she could have accomplished if she were still here in the physical. But she is still here in spirit, and I for one am happy that I got a chance to be a real fan. RIP Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001)
Also RIP: Eric Forman, Anthony Dodd, Scott Gallin, Douglas Kratz, Christopher Maldonado, Keith Wallace, Gina Smith and Luis Morales III.
The music industry as we knew it is slowly dying. Record sales are no where near where they used to be, labels definitely aren’t grooming and pushing artists the same, and it seems like people are just taking what they can get these days…because there isn’t much to get. There are a lot a reasons for this, I suppose, and I’m not even gonna get into my theories. But it’s funny because every once in awhile, new/underground/non-pushed/independent music manages to go from nothing to something strictly off of an artists’ personal effort and grind. (yes, I just used my most unfavorite word, lol).
A leaked song can ignite a smash (“Your Love” Nicki Minaj), a mixtape can set the stage for stardom (as in Drake’s case) and even an established artist can benefit from a more grassroots approach. This is currently happening for Chris Brown with his song “Dueces” which was from the mixtape he did with Tyga released in May. Now I didn’t download this mixtape (Chris is rapping?! Ummm, nah.), but I did see the video for this song once they put it out and now the song is in rotation on the radio, I saw it on 106th & Park….it’s doing something for him right now…people are digging it! And I’m not mad at all I hope Chris is able to get back to where he was.

I like this….and I didn’t really care for the song. A good visual always helps that situation, though. Let’s hope Kimmy doesn’t watch this! It will just give her even more to be mad about. Lol.

So Lindsay has to report to jail today. Yiiiikes. She really used to be someone I really liked- not saying I no longer like her. She’s just somehow fallen down that slippery Hollywood slope. But then again, she was making ish pretty plain to us some time ago….
I hope she can pull it together…I’m rooting for her
iTunes shuffle is always a good way to bring back random memories and thoughts because a song you may not have listened to in forever will come on. And this song DEFINITELY took me back! Back to when I was an insane Usher fanatic!!! I had every poster, CD, CD single, DVD (or was it VHS?)….I’d even tape every performance he did on television. My dad thought I had a problem (lol).
Anyway, this is one of my faves by him that popped up on my shuffle and made me remember that concert tape I bought. Who knows where that thing is now?
