New York…*tear*

Here’s Jay Z’s new video for “Empire State of Mind” featuring Alicia Keys. A lot of things remind me of living in NY and I often say I’d love to move back, but THIS vid…yeah…I wanna go back tomorrow. I’m actually in the planning stages of a trip there next month to record for a week or so. So let’s hear it for Newwwww Yooooooork!

Collabos & Happenings

Mmkay, so the “challenge” I’ve been facing lately is not finding people who eff with me, but it’s been finding the RIGHT people to eff with. I have a pretty clear and distinct vision of what I’m going for, so I’ve had my eyes and ears peeled for those producers/writers. And I also don’t wanna have 20 different sounds going on. Been through a load of tracks and finally…

Last night I went up to Noontime to work with 2 producers, J.O.N. and D Clax, for the first time. And I can say I was pleasantly surprised. They had some dope stuff and we started something completely from scratch. Dope concept, too. I think and ex or 2 won’t really appreciate it as much as others (lol), but hey….

Besides those 2 guys, I’m also rocking tough with my dude Brandon Bell aka Willie Donut out of Philly/LA. We have a great synergy. If he gives me 5 tracks, I can write to at least 3. And they turn out really friggin good. We did a song a few days back that I think is my favorite song I’ve ever written.

I have another person lined up to gimme that MGMT feel :) so that may round it on out. We shall see. I think I’m a good 3 songs in…maybe 2. I’m gonna be picky and perfectionista on it :)

What else is going on with me? Possible A. Keys placement (go’n head and pray over that one yall!!!!), in with a new young artist named Lakia on Sunday (she’s the cutest! and a great voice to boot). Two more photo shoots tentatively lined up (getting my black, slim/thick Kate Moss on!), so all is moving cool in Mylah land. I’m trying to bake this lil musical cake up rest of ‘09 so that when the New Year rolls around? Sell it! I’m gonna start back up with the youtubes more often to keep yall entertained and abreast of what’s up- we were actually gonna ustream last night, but the Red Diamond kinda made us talk more, sing less. Also, listen to the “MYLAH: THE PREVIEW” mixtape to wet that whistle while you’re waiting. Haven’t downloaded it yet? Well here ya go!

If you’ve already got the mixtape, what’s your favorite song? I’ve gotten some feedback, but I wanna know more. See where yall head’s are at :)

Dope Photography

The other day I was on vmagazine.com just randomly looking at photographer’s portfolios for inspiration. I came upon the port of Irek Kielczyk and was AMAZED! I don’t know what it is, but his work struck a creative chord. This play with lights and currents…dopeness. Here are a few examples of his work, but to see the full portfolio of this uber talented Polish photographer, visit his site at www.IREKKIELCZYK.com.

5…4…3…2…1

For a few weeks now (months, maybe?) I’ve been talking about giving yall some ear candy to tide you over while I’m trying to make an album come to life. Well, life has a way of slowing ya down at times, but after a few delays and “eff-it” moments, I’M FINALLY DONE WITH MY SAMPLER PLATTER! My appetizer, my mixtape (hate that word), my PREVIEW. Tomorrow, I’ll be posting up a link where you can download 8 songs I’ve recorded for yall. Nothing fancy…a couple covers, a couple “re-mixes” and a few originals…but I just wanted to give yall something while I’m plugging along on this “impact the world” mission. Stay tuned, angels…

How YOOOOOU doin’?

The past few days I’ve been in a superb mood and have been very inspired to write. I don’t exactly know why, but I’m definitely happy to have God’s increased favor on me! I guess it’s true what they about artists/writers: when you’re going through something, you create good art. I am in what you could call a valley, I guess. I could be stressed or down about it, but strangely (or maybe no so strange at all!) I’m like in the greatest mood! I recognize the sharpening that’s happening. I see and feel the strength and clarity I’m gaining. This stuff is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things!

Impossible is nothing!

So what am I doing? That seems to be the million dollar question, though I thought I’d already answered it a hundred and two times. I’m working on my project!!! I’ve been trying to get the right tracks to create the right sound that I have a vision for. That’s been a little slow going, but it’s going. I think I’m kinda in a groove with my homeboy Bellz out of Philly. I’m not sure if I should say who he is affiliated with…I mean he’s dope on his own…but it’s some verrrrry good company. We’ve got a good chemistry going on, so I’m gonna ride with it. I have some other producer feathers in the cap….Kwam, I still waiting for you!…and really I’m just trying to ready a single that I can virally infect the world with! Infect in the best type of way :)

And I’m still going to give yall a teaser to download. It’s called Mylah:The Preview. I’m doing the finishing touches now and hopefully, around working and just life, I’ll have it all finito by this week’s end. I keep getting sidetracked by the main goal, so that’s been the delay on that. Valid reason, I think.

What else? That about it. I’m looking for shows to perform at. I’m looking for producers who have that alt-r&b heat, graphic designers, any creative energy is welcome. Yep. So that’s my update. Maybe this’ll help with the random “How’s life? How’s music?” texts that I get (lol). Kisses.

Dope Girl Fresh / Shingai Shoniwa

Mmkay, so I started this photo album on Facebook called “Things That Turn Me On.” A bunch of images, mostly fashion related, that get my creative juices flowing. As I was looking through images I’d saved in my laptop over time, I noticed that most of the fashion-y ones were of white girls, not black girls. Hmmm….that made me sad. My reality is, though, most blacks gals don’t “push the envelope” when it comes to fashion. Collectively, there’s this belief that it’s more about labels than actual style. Some that are out-the-box stylisticly, are looked at as a little strange. Ho-hum. Even I sometimes fall victim to a uniform. But that has a little less to do with conformity than with just plain being style-lazy (lol).

Anywhoooo…here’s a Black chick that really rocks my boat, Shingai Shoniwa. She’s the lead singer of the British band Noisettes. I was into’d to them by my associate at Def Jam (whose parent company they’re distributed by) and though I dug the music, I dug her fresh even more. Avant Garde clothes, wild and free hair, different voice, and she plays guitar (dammit, Daddy, why didn’t you MAKE me follow in your guitar footsteps, lol). She’s definitely a Dope Girl Fresh.
