R.I.P. Vernon Forrest

Siiigh, yet another R.I.P. Boxer Vernon Forrest was gunned down this weekend in Atlanta during an robbery. Very sad news and it’s made even more sad because he did such honorable things OUTSIDE of his sport. I didn’t even know this until today, but what he did through his organization, Destiny’s Child Inc, was absolutely amazing. He was a blessing to these young men. A great example of how to use your influence to touch others and change lives. Watch and learn.

R.I.P. to E. Lynn Harris

Obit Harris

In sad news, one of my favorite authors, E. Lynn Harris, passed away unexpectedly in California while in the midst of a West Coast book publicity tour. Publicist Laura Gilmore said Harris died Thursday night after being stricken at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, and a cause of death had not been determined. She said Harris, who lived in Atlanta, fell ill on a train to Los Angeles a few days ago and blacked out for a few minutes, but seemed fine after that. Full details are not yet known. Prayers go out to his family and friends.

Dope Girl Fresh #5

Here’s a lady who I think has a dope style, voice, look, & aura.  She’s grossly underrated, but she does have a die-hard fan following (I’m one of ‘em).  It’s Miss Teedra Moses.  She’s been caught up in label dramas, but has still kept things going, recently releasing a new song called “Everybody Rock.”  I first saw her opening up for Cee-Lo Green in Miami and was so impressed by her stage performance…and she always rocks super-cute mini dresses! :)   Check her out….

Fashion Plate

I am a fashion girl for sure and always have been. I don’t know if it came from fashionable parents, watching tv, or my grandmother giving my that Vogue Magazine subscription at 12 (lol), but whatever it is I LOVE CLOTHES. It’d be great to be able to rock D Squared, Heatherette, Betsey Johnson, and Balmain all day er’day, but mama’s pockets don’t allow for that. I do know how to somewhat emulate those looks, though. One place I love that does a “lo” version of a “hi” look very well is Bebe. And honeeeey, some of their new stuff?!?! I gotta get a 2nd job so that I can get the fall wardrobe up :) No, seriously.

Dammit, man…

I twittered this the other day, but for those of you NOT  on my twitter list, the Rihanna monster strikes again!!!  I saw these pics of her “new” haircut, and got oh-so-pissed.

Here’s MY “new” haircut last month…

Whyyyyyyyy!!!!????? I mean, I shaved my side when I knew I was going to Def Jam IN ORDER TO NOT LOOK LIKE RIHANNA! Now, what maine? It’s all f**ked up, maine! (lol). I guess the different color bangs save it a little, but the first one who says “Hey, you’re copying RihRih!” I’ma wanna give them 5 to the mouth area. Geez, Rihanna….we need to have a conversation, homie.

**DISCLAIMER** I’m a Rihanna fan, not a Rihanna hater. Don’t get it mistaken. ;)

What means the world to you?

I was having a “life discussion” with a friend and we were going over how we (“we” meaning artistic types, mostly, but not exclusively) are always chasing success or that next level of success. On my drive home, I was thinking about the convo and it dawned on me that everyone’s version of success and happiness is different. For some, becoming a manager at a store or restaurant is considered success. For others, amassing a billion dollars would be success. There are many roads to happiness when you think about it.

For example, I’m share something with yall. As much as I LOVE to sing and perform, it wouldn’t make me completely happy to be on a nonstop touring grind, year after year after year. I could easily make some nice lil change off 1 or 2 albums and disappear from the spot light. I’d still sing- I’ll do that forever!- but to have the stage and limelight be my ONLY life and reality? Nah. My version of happiness would look more like me flipping that recording artist money and making it grow so that I could become a phenomenal wife and mother. We’d travel often and extensively, seeing all types of different cultures and ways of living, learning and always exploring. I’d help build wealth with my partner so that our kids would have great opportunities in their futures. I’d be building a legacy of a strong family and striving for excellence for my kids, their kids, etc.

I’d speak to and encourage young people-especially young girls- on how to be their best selves and live up to their full potentials. I’d be a blessing to others. THAT is happiness to Mylah. Of course, we’d throw in an occasional album and tour to keep the guap coming :) and to satisfy the stage bug.

Another artist’s vision of happy might be steady grinding, party life, poppin’ bottles and living fast/dying young. To each his own.

For me, I can’t be 200% immersed in this music game. Life, I mean real actual life, has soooooo many more beautiful things to it that I want to experience. The grind can be just that at times- a grind. Wearing on your well being and your spirit. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t wanna do ANYTHING else but music and it’s a complete blessing to be where I am (though I have so much further to go!), but I don’t want the grind to BE my life. That aint living.  I want to always try and maintain a balance, because when you go home at night, if you’re unhappy, what is it all for?  All the money, cars, jewels, groupies, etc in the world can’t give you sanity when you’re all alone.  I just know that my ultimate version of success is me being happy and living a fulfilled life.

What’s your version of success?

Sweetest Thing

I’m feeling this way today :) Thank GOD that Debbie Downer bug flew away. Now I can get back to the business of life-upgrades, character building, and luuuuuuuvin’ (lol). Yeah, this one’s for YOU.
